Dan Ruger : A Cobbler Who Goes the Extra Mile

On the outskirts of Salt Lake City, Dan Ruger practices a craft that is slowly disappearing from western consumer society; he is a cobbler, and his shop speaks of an almost bygone era when work was painstakingly done by hand with the help of tools many of which do not run on electricity. Trained in the 1960s by Lebanese immigrants, Dan learned to care for his customers as much as his craft. Skilled as he is, he doesn’t charge as much as he could, and often goes the extra mile for customers. In this story, he is crafting shoes for a disabled customer who was having trouble finding a replacement for the shoes that had served them well for decades. For Dan, what goes around comes around, and he won't compromise his own ethic by price-gouging customers simply because he's the only cobbler in his area.
