As a student, Bob Giordano was already a bicycle lover and advocate but going to Europe took his passion to an all new level. Having experienced European bicycle-friendly cities, Bob came home with a mission: he would do everything in his power to promote safe and affordable cycling in his hometown of Missoula, MT. First, Bob opened a shop where people could come and learn to fix their own bikes. Donated bicycles helped him create a program by which low-income community members would get free cycles in return for time spent helping other cyclists at the shop. Seventeen years later, the “Missoula Free Cycles” shop is an ongoing success and Bob has gone on to create a “Missoula Institute for Sustainable Transportation” (MIST) that advocates for safer sharing of the road between cars and bicycles in and around Missoula.
